NGOs Sensitize Grassroot Players on Inclusive and Good Governance
It was a day of enlightenment when a Pan-African non governmental organization, the African Democratic Development Initiative (AFRIDEVI), in collaboration with Gbawat Foundation held a sensitization programme on the roles, advantages and importance of community participation in achieving good governance.
The lecture which took place at the Ikorodu West LCDA, Owutu, Ikorodu had the theme : Roles Of Community Participation In Good Governance at The Grassroot – Challenges And Prospects, with Politicians and Policy Makers, Community Development Associations (CDAs), CDC executives and members, Local Government Administrators and party officials in attendance.
In his Keynote Speech, Majority Leader at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. SOB Agunbiade called for an all round inclusive relationship between the elected officials and electorate. He believes that is a gateway to guaranteeing a successful administration.
“Elected representatives need to be close to the electorate to ensure smooth governance. Gatherings like this needs to be encouraged constantly to bridge the leaders-followers gap”.
He also denounced the habit of bugging down the representatives with personal problems rather than challenging them on the delivery of Good governance.
“We cannot be asking for money and and personal favours from our elected officials. We should instead channel our demands into asking for the fruits of governance and democracy.
“We should challenge them constantly on what they have delivered as dividends and not seek for individual or personal gains”, he said.
He thanked the organiser of the event and challenged those present to continue in the same stride.
In her own speech, Special guest of Honour and the Chairperson Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Olajumoke Ademehin sought for more collaborations between the electorate and their officials. She noted that her office is open to the public to ask any questions or seek clarifications.
She attributed her success in the local government to a healthy and mutual relationship between her office and the electorate.
She also used the opportunity to urge the electorate to be good citizens by paying governmental dues noting that they are needed for development.
While speaking at the event, Council Leader and the chief host of the event, Hon. Agbaje Wasiu Olomu thanked the Chairperson Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Olajumoke Ademehin for her sterling qualities. He mentioned that Gbawat Foundation has been doing its best at ‘providing comfort to humanity’.
He reeled out a host of humanitarian services the NGO has spear-headed to better the lives of the citizens. He listed the collaboration with AFRIDEVI for public enlightenment as one of their activities.
The Executive Director of African Democratic Development Initiative AFRIDEVI, Mr. Olusesan Olukoya said his organisation would continue to champion good governance as this would serve as to better the lives of the teeming public.
