The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) on Tuesday celebrated some of its own at the 20th anniversary of the association held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island. Lagos.
As part of the activities to mark the anniversary, FTAN honoured some individuals that have contributed immensely to the growth and development of the federation.
In his opening remarks, the President of FTAN, Alhaji Rabo K. Saleh said the Tourism sector is the future of Nigeria. He stated that the industry has come this far as a result of the fervent passion of some Nigerians who did all they could to see it harnessed.
“The idea of today’s celebration is to honour those who have given so much to see tourism grow to its present state. The association is very mindful of the role the awardees played in the association and it was just proper that they should be recognised on this auspicious occasion”, he said
He also used the opportunity to canvass for support from the government, private and corporate organisations to harness the industry’s inexhaustible potential for the greater development of our cultural emancipation and economic growth.
While giving a citation on the history of the organisation, one-time Commissioner for Home Affairs and Tourism in Lagos State and later Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Franklin Adejuwon said Tourism was formerly under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry until a former Minister of Commerce and Industry, Rear Admiral Sunday Areola decided to set up a committee to look into the formation of an umbrella body for tourism in the country.
“There were so many associations. Everybody was approaching the government for one thing or the other. The minister saw the need for these tourism activities to be coordinated and to bring the practitioners together under one umbrella to approach government with one voice instead different tourism associations all approaching government at the same time.
“This led to the birth of FTAN 20 years ago”, he said.
