INEC deregisters 74, leaves only 18 political parties in Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has deregistered seventy four political parties for failing to meet up with the constitutional requirement of existence.
This now leaves only eighteen political parties in the country after fulfilling the constitutional requirements to exist.
The electoral body said it carried out a review of their performance after the 2019 general election.
The political parties were deregistered because of their failure to meet various criteria stipulated by the constitution during the elections, ” Yakubu said
Nigeria in total has 92 political parties registered.
With the new move by INEC, Nigeria now officially has 18 registered political parties
Meanwhile, the electoral commission has announced the dates for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.
The vote in Edo will hold on the nineteenth of September while that of Ondo will hold on the tenth of October.
